Dryness of the centre of the cornea, is it serious?

I went to the optician today who said I have dryness in the centre of my cornea. Because of this he said I should limit the amount I wear contact lenses to a maximum of 12 hours a day and no more than 5 days a week. I have had considerable discomfort recently with contacts and felt my tolerance was decreasing. He said I should also use eye drops regularly throughout the day. I have to go back in two months time.

I have worn contacts for 10 years and never had any problem or been told to limit how much I wear contacts so am rather concerned. Is this a serious issue?
