Do polarized lenses effect the strength of the lens?

I'm looking at getting some glasses this weekend and I have the option of getting polarized lenses. They seem like a neat idea and helpful when it comes to protecting ones eyes, but do they have any negative effects? Such as making the lens not work properly or less effective?

From what I know, lenses are coated with a thin material or liquid that reacts to sunlight.
