Slit Lamp Test with Contact Lens?

What is an ophthalmologist looking at/for when he puts a lens on the patient's eye (after numbing it) and looks at it with a slit lamp? Does that mean he's checking the retina and optic nerve?
Added (1). By putting a lens on the eye, I mean holding it on the eye, to clarify.
